Standstill to Airborne in 15 seconds! Shortest plane take off from dangerous Lukla Airport in Nepal
Lukla Airport, also known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport, is a small airport located in the town of Lukla in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. It is considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its short runway, steep gradient, and the surrounding mountainous terrain.
In 2022, i visited Lukla Airport during my Everest Base Camp trek. It was a lifetime experience for me to land and take off from Lukla airport onboard Sita Air. I recorded the video on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which have a 10X optical zoom.
The Lukla airport serves as a gateway to the Everest region and is the starting point for many treks and expeditions to Mount Everest and other nearby peaks. The airport is primarily used by local airlines and helicopter operators to transport tourists, climbers, and supplies to the region.
The runway at Lukla Airport is only 527 meters long and has a steep gradient of 12%, making it challenging for pilots to land and take off safely. The airport is also surrounded by mountains, which can create unpredictable winds and turbulence, making flying conditions even more difficult.
Despite its reputation as a dangerous airport, Lukla Airport is a vital lifeline for the people of the Everest region, providing access to medical care, education, and other essential services. It is a testament to the skill and expertise of the pilots and staff who work there that the airport has operated safely for so many years.
