There's been plans for a long time now, to introduce a player status system into the game. Status system basically means condition stats for the player, such as hunger and temperature. The first iteration of this is set to arrive in update 3.9 which is scheduled for this quarter.

Yesterday, CIG took to their Spectrum forums for an AMA session to discuss the topic, and give people some details on exactly how the new status system will work.
