Star Ocean: The Second Story R - Clashing Styles [Demo | Universe | PS5 Gameplay]
18Trying out the full gameplay demo for Star Ocean: The Second Story R on PS5, an enhanced remake of the game (with pieces also based on the PSP version, Star Ocean: Second Evolution). Deciding to play on Universe because I never actually have done so on Star Ocean 2 before, and you can do that from the start here! I'm working through as Rena here.
This demo covers up through Krosse Cave, and I beat one but not both bosses. Thankfully, the Gargoyles boss *is* actually optional - you simply can just skip that chest. Which, given that the game over screen is telling me to Item Create/level those skills and I *can't*...
Some of the stylistic choices are... interesting. Screens have been rearranged or have had additions. There's no more random encounters - you can now see them on the field, like in Star Ocean 3, 4, 5, and 6 (though, not what is in them). You can now just retry if you die on a fight, but also you can no longer update guest character equipment (or steal it, which is gonna suck in the full game come places like Mars).
I did feel a bit rushed in this demo, as there's a three hour gameplay timelimit on it. I felt I couldn't explore what was available to me on the world map, and like I had to rush through battles. Also, you can only go to level 12, and again you can't improve Item Creation skills at all. There's also additions in battle like the guard thing (which is about all that saved me on Allen, since I could beat down and animation lock him), and the ability to summon people in (including, somehow, protagonists from the other games).
I'm still looking forward to the full game though! Star Ocean 2 is probably my second favourite overall Star Ocean game. I want to be able to fully explore this enhanced map!
...Also it seems I Let's Play a Star Ocean game every 6 years, and it has been 6 years since I did Star Ocean 3 (and 12 years since Star Ocean 4) so I do believe it's time for another one...
