Game play starts at 03:42. * A few points about this game. A few months ago, I absolutely could not get Rogue Leader to run at all. This video is being shared because I'm amazed it runs on Steam Deck currently, even if not perfectly. You have to understand, this isn't because of limitations of the Deck or failings of Dolphin. It's because Factor 5 was truly on some next level shit when they developed the game. Factor 5 developed custom technologies in combination with other tools to get it done in 9 months that created a level of quality that even Nintendo couldn't figure out how they pulled off, on the hardware Nintendo developed.

Factor 5 achieved nothing short of dark sorcery when making Star Wars Rogue Leader which is why trying to emulate it can be a total pain. There is a good chance that the game will never run perfectly on Steam Deck but I'll take what I can get. Getting Rebel Strike to run on Steam Deck is just asking the impossible.

Also, the Gamecube controller was originally designed to support motion control and Factor 5 planned for Rogue Leader to support motion control. If Nintendo would have followed through with that, it would have solved one of the biggest problems with the game. Analog aiming sucks. Full stop. It. Sucks.

You can see it in the video as I was reminded as I replayed the game. The controls are too slow and too clumsy. It feels janky when turning and trying to line up a target. Aiming is a chore because analog controls are trash when it comes to precise aiming with speed (yes, this is true even today on PS5 without motion control and Series X/S making auto aim and aim bots a necessity). The only reason I was able to complete this back in the day was due to stubborness and simply not knowing any better.

The controls for Rogue Leader were never good though, make no mistake. If Rogue Leader supported motion control, then emulating it on Steam Deck would have allowed aiming with trackpad and gyro "As Mouse" for far superior accuracy in this era, whereas motion control could have improved the game so much in the Gamecube era (if well implemented).

Oh, what could have been...
