It's been almost a year since I've uploaded any mecha videos... Well, it certainly hasn't been the best mecha year. There have been some things like the Assault Suit Leynos remake, and Dual Gear being a promising project, but not much big news outside of Japan's console releases, and even then Japan's console gaming has been pretty quiet on the mecha front...

So here's a little mecha game available on Steam pretty cheap. Stardust Vanguards is an arcade/retro style cave shooter, but the catch is that it's primarily focused on multiplayer. Up to four players can lock into shoot'em up combat with each other, or team up to face off against waves of space pirates.

The game mechanics are rather simple. You have a shoot button, melee, shield, support, and boost trigger. Your mech actually has a very scarce amount of shots (about a second of firing), so primarily you will be cutting through your enemies, and slashing projectiles back, which reflects them.

When you destroy enemies, you gain points. With those, you hold the support button, and AI allies will fly in to aid you. Your shield lasts three seconds, though it can take an indefinite beating for that long. Boosting is great mobility, but it can be easy to overshoot into stray projectiles, and spamming it will overheat you. Shield and ammo recharge between waves/kills, so you mostly have to plan how to use your resources as they are very few and not convenient to regain, it adds a nice little strategic and management to the game.

Multiplayer can be played as a free for all, teams, King Of The Hill, and there's even a Space Soccer mode (wish I could try that one...).

And that's about it. Not much in content, but it's very refined and fun, the music is pretty alright, and it's only $4. There's not many PVP or co-op shmups out there, and this one focuses on both excellently, so it's worth getting if you have at least one partner or rival to play with. Survival can be played alone, but there's only so much lasting replayability from playing that single player...
