If you're new to Bethesda RPGs, it could well be a surprise how integral your companion & followers are to the game - and with Starfield that integration has been taken to the next level.
In this beginners guide video I show you how to change which of your NPC followers or crewmates is following you - how to change your companion. I show you how to make your companion not follow you (stay where they are), how useful followers are if you have put them in the right location, and how to get rid of a follower permanently.
To recruit NPC's as followers, it will come up as a dialogue option, normally after completing a task for them, or as part of the games story.
When you first talk to your companion the language used in the text conversation "I think its time we went our separate ways" might seem a little too extreme - that you want them to go away and you'll lose them as a follower, or that they'll harbor resentment towards you, but don't worry, they won't.
You can swap and change your companion role between followers as often as you like without consequences, and in fact you'll want to take different followers as companions on different missions depending on which skills & perks they might have that'll be useful for that mission.
Some NPC followers work best in your ship, others at your Outposts, or some as your direct follower companion.
