Starfield PC Optimization Guide - Best Graphics Settings for 60 FPS!
Apologies for the long hiatus guys, but Starfield has finally come upon us. Five years since Bethesda first revealed its trailer in 2018, this game has now arrived and is actually real - just in an early access state that is.
And those five years do sure show in the product. First off, the game is devoid of infamous bugs. Sure, they may be small NPC pathing and physics glitches, but the game works really flawlessly as far as my playtime is concerned. The game's art and especially its lighting is also surprisingly beautiful - save for some poor spots. The combat is hands down Bethesda's best yet, and the soundtrack is just sublime to listen to wherever you are in the game.
However, its optimization is quite questionable. The game is extremely demanding both on your GPU and CPU. It's may be BGS' best-looking game to date, but I don't think the visuals justify this level of performance.
But there are some good news! Additional performance can very much be gained from a proper understanding of how the graphics settings work. So let's take a look at them.
Timeline
0:00 - Intro
0:48 - My Hardware Specs and Optimization Target (Correction: It's a 3080TI, not 3070)
1:19 - Common GPU-bound Settings
4:25 - Subtle GPU-bound Settings (very important)
6:35 - DLSS vs FSR
7:52 - About the CPU-bottleneck
8:54 - TL;DR
9:17 - Optimized Settings vs Ultra Preset
IMPORTANT! Ensure to enable Re-Bar (NVIDIA) or SAM (AMD) on both your Bios and GPU for a substantial performance gain.
For AMD:
- Open Radeon Software, select your "Starfield" game profile and enable 'Smart Access Memory'
For NVIDIA:
- Download latest NVIDIA Profile Inspector (nvidiaProfileInspector.zip): https://github.com/Orbmu2k/nvidiaProfileInspector/releases
- Run nvidiaProfileInspector.exe
- Select 'Starfield' in "Profiles" on upper left
- Scroll down to Section 5 - Common
- Make sure "rBAR" is Enabled
How to Install DLSS mod
Step 1: Download DLSS mod zip file here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nAEil-gz5592i5JPWKhKdGgNcywWwicN/view?usp=sharing
Step 2: Copy entire zip file inside Starfield folder where game's .exe file exists
Step 3: Right click zip file and select "Extract Here".
Step 4: Run Game and Press F1 to bring up DLSS plugin menu. I recommend Preset D for image quality. DLSS will replace FSR so make sure FSR is selected in graphics options.
Note: I am using DLSS 2.5.1 instead of 3.5 because I find DLSS 2 much cleaner than 3.
