I like to 100% hard games and play League of Legends.
Yes this is possible! The first time I tried this and saw that the crisis fleets were in the millions I doubted I could do it. This is certainly difficult to achieve, and it takes quite a while. The footage is sped up 16x. The full unedited footage was 13 segments between 30 to 120 minutes, played over the course of many days. I left all of the settings as the large galaxy default except I turned the victory year off and bumped difficulty to grand admiral and crisis strength to 25x.
My strategy was to play pretty tall and focus on tech. I tried to spam as many energy weapons repeatables as possible and hope for the Prethoryn scourge. As you can see, this was very successful. I never lost a single major battle against their fleets, even when they were tripled up and I was down several million in combined fleet power in the battle. Overall this run was fairly lucky, even though my scion origin lowrolled. Having the enigmatic fortress in my territory as well as a freebie fallen empire to steamroll gave me a nice boost. If you want to try this yourself, I would suggest a different origin. Keeping it simple with prosperous unification might be the way to go.
