Released on March 30, 2007, by Frictional Games, Penumbra tells a story set six years previous. Philip, whose mother recently died, receives a letter claiming to be from a father he thought dead. Following clues leads the 30-year-old physicist to northern Greenland, where he begins his search.
Controls are standard (although less so for the time), with W, A, S, and D for movement, Q and E for leaning, Left-Ctrl for crouching, Space bar for jumping, and Tab for inventory. Interactions are either a LMB click (such as to enter an area or to press a button); holding LMB and moving the mouse to move objects (open drawers, pull levers, etc.); or LMB to lift an object and RMB to throw it.
After arriving in northern Greenland, Philips enters a vault-like underground chamber and continues through mines, tunnels, and other mysterious environments as he tries to navigate his way out. Along the way, he picks up clues to tell him what may have befallen his father, and what might become of himself. Let's play Penumbra: Overture and discover the dangers lurking below.
