I try out a handful of recently-made indie games mostly compatible with NES or Game Boy. Some are homages, some demakes, some original, some unfinished demos, it's a grab bag of retro-flavoured goodness! Games played:

Tiger Jenny, 2014, Ludosity. Made for a retro game event in Sweden, this NES game has only a few levels and the planned boss fight hasn't been implemented, but it's a decent little Castlevania homage starring characters from Ittle Dew.

neMULEsis, 2021, John Vanderhoef. I've played some of John's Muleniverse games before (NES homebrews in a variety of genres that expand on the world of Danielle Bunten Berry's classic economic strategy game Mule); this one is a Contra homage with five multi-part stages of run and gun action and lots of bosses. I played through the whole thing, it's pretty cool!

Trogday Micro Game, 2022, Videlectrix. This tiny GBC game stars the Homestar Runner spinoff character Trogdor the dragon, clumsily platforming through a short stage, burninating some stuff, then facing off with a simple boss. Like other Videlectrix games, the jokes are better than the gameplay!

Little Snow, 2021, Sir Cathy Wise. This GB homebrew was made by my spouse! It's her first ever game, a charming little adventure with some puzzles, based on the fairy tale Snow White. It's lovely, with some very nice pixel art.

Devolver Bootleg, 2019, Doinksoft. Unlike the others on this list this wasn't distributed as a ROM playable on console or emulator, but it heavily mimics the stylings of the NES or similar 8-bit consoles. Presenting itself as a bootleg multicart, the selection consists of demakes of games Devolver Digital has published. I showed off all the eight titles, but spent the most time on playing through the Ape Out demake Ape Out Jr, which successfully fuses the original's puzzle-combat gameplay and aesthetics with Donkey Kong Jr.-style platforming and sprites. I also tried to get through Catsylvania, the Gato Roboto/Castlevania demake but it was too hard.

Mojon Twins Gran Sabiduría - 31 in 1 Real Game!, 2016, Mojon Twins. The Spanish collective have gathered a bunch of their previous demos and experiments, some new, some converted from ZX Spectrum homebrews, some simple variants or sprite edits of other games in the set, and presented them as a goofy pirate NES multicart. Their characteristic use of female nudity caused me to shy away from displaying many of the titles since I try to keep the stream family-friendly, but I found a few fun games. There's several Commando-esque shooters on there. The flip-screen Sonic parody "Sonic Mal" and its variant "Espinete" are decent (the latter's use of the Sesame Street theme also caused me some amusement). "Rendezvous" had a great concept with dual protagonists taking turns to find each other, although I had to abandon it after one level due to the nudity issue. I closed out the stream by playing through the creepily atmospheric "Zombie Calavera Prologue", originally a Spectrum game but this version adds María as a playable character, whose hover ability I found very helpful to explore the large open level to find all the crosses needed to complete the game (and a few secrets and glitches along the way!).
