Stream: Frogger 2: Swampy's Quest (GBC & DC) and more!
My good friend Gibbon joins me on commentary for this one as she's a Frogger fan, thanks very much to her for this! I start by showing a bit of the Frogger ports on GBC (the colourised GB version in the Konami GB Collection 2 cart and the separate standalone port) and some ripoffs of the Frogger formula (Pigs in Space starring Miss Piggy and Freeway on Atari 2600) before playing through the whole of Frogger 2 on GBC. This was the handheld companion game to Swampy's Revenge but hews closer to the arcade original, while evolving the formula with more involved level designs. It's pretty cool! And you can play the whole game as Lillie Frog.
Afterwards I play through several levels of the console version of Swampy's Revenge, by Blitz Games. As Gibbon notes it's a more linear iteration on the 1997 reboot but still has plenty of cool tricks up its sleeve. In this one control alternates between Frogger and Lillie, and there's cutscenes and whiz-bang 3D graphics. I played the Dreamcast port as I thought it would be better looking than the PSX version. After that we take a quick look at Zapper, a spiritual successor by the same developer (and publisher) that reuses many of the same mechanics and structure, as well as its GBA companion game. I end the stream by showing some gameplay of the Dance Mat-controlled game for young children, Konami Kids Playground: Frogger. The minigames are simple but it does show how the character design evolved later in the series.
