I do a quick tour of games that caught my eye on Sonic Fangames HQ as part of various SAGE events throughout the year. This includes fangames and demos for original indie games. Games played:

-Birdo's Holiday Brawl, by Super Squidoodle. This NES-style homage combines the setting and looks of Super Mario Bros 2/USA with the gameplay of the Virtual Boy title Mario Clash (and some holiday trappings thrown in for good measure). The arcadey action is fun and the three depth layers are a nice twist... playing as Birdo is an excellent bonus as well! I did a few runs, and I'm pretty sure the game just loops after a while.

-Bubsy - (Unnamed fangame) demo, by Sharb. A recreation of the first level in Bubsy 1, this soups up the graphics and tweaks some mechanics. Along with a widescreen presentation this makes for a much more playable and enjoyable incarnation of Bubsy! Although this demo only has one level, I hope it leads to more in the future.

-Toree Saturn demo and Toree Jolly Jam, by Siactro. I've played Siactro's other Toree games on stream before, and they're delightful bite-sized speedy 3D platformers with a PSX style. Toree Saturn is ostensibly going for a more Saturn skew, although it's similar to what came before and no less joyful. The current demo is only one stage and no special features but showcases a tweaked movement system that includes a drop dash and homing attack. Toree Jolly Jam is a standalone release which includes the new mechanics, with a holiday theme. There's only one level but playing it over several times unlocks bonuses like new playable characters (both from Siactro games and crossover guests), and minigames in the style of Nights, 16-bit RPGs, and 2.5D platformers.

-Pangolin Cassowary demo, by ocotilloisland. This cute puzzle platformer has a unique movement system built around its unusual buddy duo. Cassowary can kick Pangolin in ball form, who can then roll around until they regroup. There's one level in the demo that showcases this interesting mechanic although some of the collectibles had me stumped!
