Streets of Rage 2 Opening
Streets of Rage 2 Opening
Sega's Streets of Rage series, also called Bare Knuckle in Japan, was one of the best and most popular beat 'em up games inspired by Capcom's Final Fight. The first Streets of Rage impressed players with its large number of moves and easy-to-use controls, similar to those of Final Fight. The game also had a unique feature where players could hit enemies from behind and included two-player co-op play. Although the graphics were not the best, the game made up for it by having many characters on the screen at once, which was impressive for its time in 1991.
However, the real highlight of the game was the outstanding soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro. His music showcased the artistic and technical capabilities of the Sega Genesis sound hardware. The soundtrack was constantly changing to match the game's scenes and included bass-heavy electronic music. Critics who doubted the Genesis's sound capabilities were silenced by Koshiro's masterful sound design.
For those interested, a modified version of the game was released for the Sega CD on the 5-in-1 disc that came with the system. The sound was improved, with higher quality samples for hits and yells, but some players found that the cleaner samples seemed out of place.
Overall, Streets of Rage is an excellent game and one of the best beat 'em ups of its time, outdone only by its direct sequel. If you enjoy this genre and have not played this classic Sega game, it's time to give it a try!
