Boost is the main cause of Sonic's downfall in to boring, overly linear Gameplay.
What used to require the player to think and interact with the game, now involves pressing a single button and "watching" the game unfold.

This devolved the level structure of the games to accommodate the mechanic resulting in linear levels with almost nothing to them, and no real skill involved in getting good ranks or times.
