Struggling with side steppers? The answer. (Read description) Fight Night Champion Tutorial & Guide
As you're reading this, remember that I am fighting sim in the majority of the fight. DO NOT CARE ABOUT ROUNDS. I have 16s (16 is the maximum rating for speed on any punch) or less on all of my punches. Be sure to check the video and watch what I'm putting into words here. I know it can be intimidating when fighting someone who is adamant on side stepping nonstop when you don't know how to beat them, so I made this video to help you. This player I've beaten countless times in 3 rounds or less but I wanted to make a legitimate gameplan to beat people like him as most people don't have the combos that I have. So, to start you need to target their body and don't think of it as the sole thing that gasses them. Remember to NOT sidestep (or back step) yourself as that consumes stamina. Use your movement, utilize in and out footwork to keep them side stepping. What I mean by that is exactly what I do in portions of the fight, I go in and out, back and forth without side stepping or back stepping to bait the opponent so he continues to sidestep and throw punches. As much as you dislike it, their side stepping is a GOOD thing for you. The more they side step, the better. This will gas them. You should rejoice at the sight of them still side stepping. It's also OK to push forward on them, just don't get sucked into their "draft" (a Midnight Club reference). What I mean by that is don't rush straight at them. You need to get close to them, just close enough to where you want to be, and then only move side-to-side. Don't step where their feet JUST WERE or they will have you chasing them like that for the entire fight. Also don't target their body 100%, keep non power shots to their head here and there so they're not catching on to your plan to gas them. DON'T worry about losing rounds or being knocked down. Use the first half of the fight to completely break them down, and even if they win ALL of the first 5 rounds, that's completely OK. Your goal isn't to win the first 5 rounds, it's to win the fight. Be sure to always press forward and early on use the push a bit and follow it with a power straight. This will pay dividends. Program the opponent to react to the push. Later on in the fight (when they're dead gassed) they will stop side stepping as much and you'll have to use that push again for when they do. Every time you push them they will keep reacting to the push by side stepping and trying to throw. This is exactly what you want them to do, as I've said we need to keep them always side stepping. When you can land a body shot on them as they're side stepping, that is ideal. The side step alone consumes stamina but when you add a body shot into the mix (or even better, a counter punch to body) they're regretting it instantly. Keep the pace steady on them always and don't back up (in and out movement is fine AS LONG AS THEY'RE STEPPING OR THROWING) unless they voluntarily move forward out of desparation. They WILL lose stamina and you'll have the upper hand in the 2nd half of the fight. Don't just go for broke in the 6th round, make sure to stay barely ahead on headshots just as a safe gameplan to make sure you're getting the points from the round (but even if you don't, that's alright and you'll see in the fight how I made up for and still keep doing what you're doing in the 6th round and just stay on them breaking down their stamina even further. The 7th and 8th round are when you really want to switch to targeting their head. You'll know by feeling it out whether it's a good choice to switch to head shots or not. If it's not, just continue doing what you're doing. But in the 8th round you really want to damage them to the head. That alone will insure they're STILL side stepping and therefore losing stamina. Keep in mind while watching the 6th and 7th round, I stand there and LET them use that twirling head movement as that consumes a lot of stamina too. Wanna test it? Go to an offline match and do nothing but twirling head movement and see how much stamina you lose. When you get them to the point of not being able to dish out their offense, it's finally killing season. They're yours to do with as you please. They're a fish out of water, they're a bird with no wings. It's your fight and not theirs whatsoever. Once they see that, it's a shock to them. Especially if they've been winning the rounds. As you'll see in this fight, I knocked my opponent down 2 times in the 8th round and he quit. And one of the scorecards he was up by SIX POINTS. He just mentally gave up. This is just a small look into what you can do to these side steppers. I used very minimal effort. Use this gameplan that I've laid out for you and you'll see what you can do to these easy-to-beat opponents.
