Afghan troops have been making progress in a major counter-insurgency operation in Helmand Province. Operation Omid Char, meaning 'Hope Four' will secure a key area near Gereshk in the Nahr-e Saraj district, restricting Taliban movement and giving the Afghan National Army a clearer presence in the region. The operation is being led by the Afghan troops themselves, with support from 1st Battalion The Irish Guards and other regiments.

However, the operation has not been without tragedy. On Tuesday 19th October Acting Corporal David Barnsdale was killed by an explosion whilst clearing IEDs during the operation. Jerome Starkey, correspondent for The Times newspaper, was embedded with the Afghan and British troops at the time of Cpl Barnsdale's death.
