CAMPAIGN 9 of 13:
In 1541, the struggle for Hungary reached a decisive moment. After years of conflict between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburgs, Buda—once the heart of the Hungarian kingdom—became the center of a high-stakes siege. Wilhelm von Roggendorf led an imperial army to reclaim the city for Ferdinand I, but a prolonged siege, disease, and supply shortages weakened his forces.

Suleiman the Magnificent, determined to secure Ottoman control over Hungary, arrived with a powerful army to lift the siege. The ensuing battle ended in disaster for the Habsburg forces, with thousands killed or drowned in the Danube. Roggendorf himself suffered fatal wounds, and the last hopes of an immediate Habsburg reconquest were crushed.

With Buda firmly in Ottoman hands, the balance of power in Central Europe shifted. The city, once a vassal state under Ottoman influence, was now an integral part of the empire. Hungary, divided between Ottoman and Habsburg rule, would remain a battleground for decades to come.
