Sunday Longplay - Tetris Battle Gaiden (Super Famicom) - Tetris Mode, Expert
6This week on Sunday Longplay, in honor of Tetris's 40th anniversary this year, I'm dedicating the rest of this month to different iterations of Tetris! First up is a game that was initially only released in Japan on the Super Famicom, Tetris Battle Gaiden!
Though this game was initially only released in Japan, it just recently saw an overseas release last month through the Tetris Forever collection on PC and current-gen consoles. However, the text is still in Japanese, so I'm playing an English translation patch to make it easier to follow.
There are three different ways to play this game: Battlis, Tetris, and Chain. In Battlis, each different character has their own set of special attacks that you charge up by clearing yellow dots appearing on some of the Tetriminos in addition to clearing lines and sending garbage to your enemy. Tetris is just standard Tetris, clearing lines, sending garbage to your enemy with multi-line clears and combos. I haven't tried Chain mode yet, though, so I don't know what that mode is all about.
For my first playthrough, I'm playing standard Tetris on the hardest difficulty. There is a new element of strategy involved in this version of Tetris, namely that both players draw their tetriminos from a common pool, which means if you want the next line piece, you may have to play the waiting game. The AI will exploit this strategy every time a line piece shows up on the harder difficulties, but it can work to its disadvantage as well, since sometimes the line piece isn't the most optimal piece for your current situation.
