Sunday Vibin' feat. Escape from Cyber City & Cosmo Warrior Zero - 02/26/23
0On February 13th, 2023, the manga and anime world lost one of its absolute greats with Leiji Matsumoto's passing. Matsumoto was the creative force behind stuff like Space Battleship Yamato, Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and many other timeless manga/anime. The week of his passing, the Dream Harrier discord got together to watch the first Galaxy Express 999 and so with this Sunday Vibin' we play games based on his works.
The first game of the stream is kind of an infamous cdi game. Escape from Cyber City uses footage taken from Adieu Galaxy Express and Galaxy Express 999 films stitched together for the game's own original story and gameplay. The game is kind of like Dragon's Lair with a cursor as not only do you have to aim to shoot enemies, you also make movement decisions with the cursor like dodging holes in a highway. The aiming is completely broken (possibly a MAME issue?) and the hitboxes for shooting or doing anything are completely insane. This one is a mess.
Our 2nd game of the evening is more of a proper Leiji Matsumoto work. Cosmo Warrior Zero takes place within the same world as Captain Harlock & Galaxy Express 999. The game made by Taito but the story & characters were created by Matsumoto and would later become it's own anime series. The game is a 3d run n gun with some small stages but it seems the actual meat is in its boss fights or duels if you will. Small arenas with cover, charge shots, character special grenades and attacks. It's got fighting game flavor that is quite interesting. The artwork is sharp, if static, but there's lots of voice acting and character here. This one is fun and I'd recommend bumbling through the language barrier to play it.
