Super Famicom launch title live stream playthrough (Super Mario World/F-Zero) *100th video*
7In this 100th video special stream, I am doing full playthroughs of the absolute earliest release games you could ever get on the Super NES, based on the Japanese Super Famicom's launch from November 21, 1990. At the time, the SFC had only two games at the very beginning, and they are Super Mario World and the original F-Zero, coincidentally the oldest games I own. What's fascinating about those picks are that while Super Mario World, the main attraction during launch, it focuses on the style of the past Mario games with a dinosaur theme that introduced Yoshi, and the alternate pick, F-Zero, looked ahead of the skies of the future with the then-revolutionary Mode 7 that showcased the 16-bit console's powerful hardware (though SMW itself does have a small amount of it). A platformer and a fast futuristic racer, with completely different themes to prove themselves at launch. But, being two great games of course and especially the console itself was a 𝙢𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 improvement over the FC/NES, it was actually so successful, Japan suffered chaos during the Super Famicom's release, even to the point that 300,000 units sold out within hours and the government had to ship the consoles at night to prevent the Yakuza from stealing them. Looking back at those two games over 30 years later, all I can say is that was a great start for Nintendo's best console, if not the greatest system altogether, before it begins getting more masterpieces well into the 1990s until it finally retires in 2003 with a long 13-year run with 49+ million units sold worldwide.
