Why I ๐ฉ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ Mario Kart 8/Deluxe, in spite me having max 99999VR? (Read description)
This will be my last video coming from this game, because I already done a few about this particular Mario Kart, but here's my final review: I seriously do NOT like MK8, at all (this may be upsetting to younger people but I have to be honest)!
Although some people may had already seen me racing because I had maximum VR for a couple years and still occasionally play it, that was only to show my skills as an experienced veteran since the original Super NES game and attempt to spread myself to others so they could find me in YouTube, not doing it for fun.
Here's the problem about Mario Kart 8 in my mind - I find this game to be the most ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ of the series by far. Suffering the exact same brainwashing plague that GTA V did, many people played the initially released version at first, but as soon as the next port of it showed up (Deluxe), everyone left to the next and focused ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ญ๐บ on the online stuff and never played other games. Not to mention, whenever anybody says "Mario Kart", fans only think about the Deluxe of this game and not usually any other previous titles including 7, just like aforementioned GTA V (now I do love the Rockstar game on singleplayer). No other Mario Kart had forced remakes like 8, and Deluxe still has more ongoing content that is not needed and should focus on making a brand new game for the three decade old series.
Another issue is its gameplay. It's not horrible, but when doing online racing, alongside Fire-Hopping, the hit detection is too high and you have no defense when you already got hit, and the Green/Red Shells are overpowered; They do ๐ฒ๐
๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ like in the original 1992 game - stop you dead in your tracks. It's excusable in the SNES because that ๐ธ๐ข๐ด the first title so Nintendo can polish the next games and have them toned down, but in this, it's a very serious problem when you face high VR/cheating players (especially Japanese) with triple shells with so many other Items to wreck you out, or if you make a mistake taking shots. Also, the singleplayer AI was cheap as they always try to streamline you, whether you're in 50cc or the exclusive F-Zero-like 200cc. With the Coins being added back, they leave you vulnerable when trying to protect or attack opponents when you're in 1st place. Oh, and the "Blue Shell" - real name Spiny Shell, really wish it was stronger like in Double Dash. One side note, the character selection picks are so plain and not varied like older games.
Another personal issue with Mario Kart 8 is I lost many friends from this game or at least become unsupportive. When Miiverse ended and the Switch Deluxe came, the Wii U version basically went dead, and to the people that remain, I did gain a few, but they didn't prove valuable friendship or simply only focused on the game and not the outside world, like I said above about how it can be brainwashing.
As for Mario Kart 8/Deluxe as a whole, it just doesn't quite have the charm like the older titles did, and the anti-gravity concept felt so weird, especially since Nintendo added "F-Zero" content, which this caused people to believe the two series are related, but they have ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฉ๐๐๐ฃ๐ to do with each other beside debuting on Super Nintendo in the early '90s. Nostalgia fully aside, the younger generation may probably like Mario Kart DS or Wii the most, which those are great, but I always stick to the first three home games, which are Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, and Double Dash. The gameplay in those felt more original, balanced and fun (though they do have their own flaws), including the music.
So, yes, I'm criticizing MK8, for real, this time. If you like this game and disagree, sorry, but this is my opinion about it. It is good at first, but terrible in the long run. There's a reason why I stick to classic Mario Kart. If you ask me will I get Deluxe when I eventually get the Switch, the answer is capital ๐ก ๐ข! What's the point if I already have the Wii U version? I found reaching 99999VR was a ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ, as I did not gain any ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ respect, and I'm not repeating this on that port for nothing. Plus, online mode is stressful.
