Super Mario 64 (N64) Full Playthrough/Walkthrough Part 8: Shifting Sand Land
On June 23, 1996, 21 years ago, the Nintendo 64 was released. Along with it came Super Mario 64, a revolutionary title that took Mario into the third dimension with a new style of gameplay: large worlds that could be explored without time limit, stars that acted as gifts for completing objectives and new moves and power ups that left a very memorable impression on those lucky enough to play it when it first came out. Each world had its own objectives, collectables and hidden stars to find (as well as 15 hidden outside the levels). So, with Super Mario 64 finally reaching the drinking age, I wanted to celebrate by revisiting the game.
This video walkthrough will take you through all 15 worlds and will show you how to collect all 120 stars hidden throughout the castle. Each world has six stars to collect with a hidden seventh for finding 100 coins and each video in the series will cover one world (with one video covering the 15 hidden stars). If you're stuck trying to find that elusive star or need help getting to a certain world, look no further! Keep in mind that this video is applicable to the Nintendo 64 version. The Nintendo DS version has numerous changes and additions to the game that make it vastly different and this video will not help you with most of it.
This video covers the eighth world, Shifting Sand Land, which is unlocked after beating Bowser in the Dark World and venturing into the basement (though it is cleverly hidden as a wall). In order to unlock all 7 stars, you will need to grab the Wing Cap as it's crucial to many of the stars in this world (see my secret stars video for more info). I also highly recommend not doing the 100 coin star on the red coin star as you have to enter the pyramid which will block you from getting the red coin star. Also, be wary of the bird as it will steal your hat and you'll take double damage without it! Be sure to grab it back as you will not respawn with it.
