Super Mario and the Rainbow Stars is a shining example of the creativity and passion found within the Mario fan community. Developed by the talented fan creator Starshi, this adventure platformer is inspired by the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario series. The game masterfully combines a beautiful 3D overworld with engaging 2D levels, all filled with new gimmicks, challenging bosses, and cinematic cutscenes.
The game’s story begins with Mario and Luigi being invited to the Star Festival, only for their plans to go awry when they are scattered across various realms. Mario must reunite with his friends and collect the Rainbow Stars, which have been dispersed by the newly awakened Starnox, who threatens to engulf the world in darkness. Along his journey, Mario is joined by a diverse cast of partners, each bringing unique abilities and personalities to aid in the quest.
Starshi has been working on this project for several years, sharing progress through videos and images across social media. The project originally began using the SMBX 38A engine but transitioned to the SMBX 2 engine in 2023, allowing for even more refined gameplay and visuals.
The demo available includes the prologue and the entirety of the first chapter, offering about 2-3 hours of gameplay. This demo provides a perfect taste of the vibrant, pixel-art world and inventive gameplay mechanics that Super Mario and the Rainbow Stars has to offer, ensuring that fans of the series will be both impressed and excited for what’s to come.
