Super Mario Bros. 3 1-1 hack (proof of concept)
Well, I couldn't find any editors for the NES version of SMB3 that both worked on Windows 10 and weren't obnoxiously hard to use, so I decided that if I wanted to do any SMB3 hacking, I'd have to do it without an editor. And since I prefer the SNES version anyway, I decided to use that one. Since Super Mario All-Stars already has a disassembly and inchoate ROM and RAM maps, I did some poking around with a debugger and discovered at least enough information to create a custom level, which you see before you. It probably isn't that great (especially given its similarity to the original 1-1), but hey, it's something, and in any case, I didn't have a convenient GUI to build the level in, just byte code, a lot of macros, and graph paper. I may or may not continue the project; it kind of depends on if anyone else is interested in it and if I feel it worth it to do this over simply hacking SMW or another game (or homebrew). At least I learned some things in the process, though. I could probably even add custom ASM and graphics if I wanted to, but before doing any of that, I'd want to rewrite some things, since SMB3 isn't always the best at handling certain aspects of the game....
