Super Mario Bros. 3: World 8, 3rd Airship
119Super Mario Bros. 3 is full of insanely difficult and brilliantly designed levels. World 8 is most notorious for its scrolling levels, traps, and makes the game's end all the more exclusive to only the best of players. This screen (2 of 4 in this world) has 3 traps that pull you into their level at random. A beaten trap level acts as a checkpoint: should you die in the later levels you get sent back to it instead of the pipe. This airship level is the one that garuntees multiple deaths.
It scrolls along quite speedily with numerous floating platforms (that means lots of gaps) and moles occupying nearly every platform. A mistimed jump in this level garuntees a sentence back to the traps. I don't know of a Mario level that insists you won't be able to beat it on the first try other than this one.
