Foreword: I've avoided warp zones so as to show as many of the game's levels as possible.

Before launching into the review, I should point out that I generally don't cover NES games due to the fact that I never owned a NES growing up, so I've never felt particularly sentimental about the games in the machine's library. There was no way my parents could afford to buy one, so the 8-bit console era passed me by; I suppose it's my way of saying that this review isn't biased by rose-tinted memories of a fondly remember childhood.

Super Mario Bros. sees the titular hero and his brother, Luigi, travelling through the Mushroom Kingdom on a mission to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. The game is viewed from a die-on perspective where the objective is to guide Mario through 32 levels that are, effectively, elaborately designed obstacle courses. The player must guide Mario across platforms, over pits and elevators to reach the castle at the end of the level.

Each level is littered with floating blocks that can be hit from the underside to release mystery items. Some might contain coins that can be collected for bonus points, whilst others will release power-ups that grant Mario additional abilities. These include the famous mushroom that increases his size and allows him to absorb a single contact with an enemy without dying, and the fire flower that grants Mario the ability to hurl fireballs at his enemies.

The game really is the pure distillation of the platform game genre and lays down so many of the design principles for future games. It's evident that a great deal of thought went into the design of each of the game's levels. There is a definite, almost parkour-esque flow that emerges as the player gradually improves in skill and masters each level, completing it in shorter periods of time with each attempt. This is partly due to the game's controls where holding down the B button increases Mario's running speed and jump height, allowing skilled players to traverse levels at speed.

Whilst the graphics are relatively basic, the slightly jagged-edged sprites and pixelated scenery became synonymous with video games throughout the 80's and how they were portrayed in other forms of media.

The game's audio is instantly recognisable and iconic. Unlike other games that try to create a sound effect that conveys the action being performed, the reverse is true here. It's as though there's only one possible way that picking up the power mushroom could sound and it was the responsibility of the developers to recreate the sound within the game.

The fact of the matter is that Super Mario Bros. is responsible for much of video game culture that exists today and is something that every gamer should take the opportunity to experience.
