Super Mario Bros - World Record vs. Previous World Record (by Andrew Gardikis)
These runs are by Andrew Gardikis who broke his previous 4:58.15 world record with a 4:58.14 run, which is generally believed to be 1 frame faster. After the topic came up on twitch chat, I made this video to test that theory out.
I tried to frame-perfect sync the starts of the two runs according to SDA timing rules, which dictate that the timer starts on the first frame that the character is controllable. Unfortunately with 30fps video of a 60 fps game, I found that they're (probably) a half-frame apart just watching how the sprites load. As such, they are synced "frame perfect" only at the video-frame level, which only gives us *every other* game frame.
Watching the way that the sprites load, I *believe* that the video on the right is likely half of a video frame behind, but without a 60 fps source file, this is the best that can be done.
They finish on the same "frame" of this reencoded split video but since it is likely that the run on the right is indeed a single game frame behind, that would make it 0.016 seconds faster...
