Playthrough | Part 1: An Unexpected Beginning

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that this game was getting a full-blown remake. Not only that but it's going to have a lot of improvements that can benefit. But if you are wondering about this, then it's fitting that I have to do the original in preparation for the remake. I have to. So without further ado, I welcome you to Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars.

Super Mario RPG was released on March 9, 1996 in Japan for the Super Famicom. We wouldn't get this game until May 13th of the same year. Two months later. Sadly it was never released in Europe until it came out on the Wii Virtual Console in 2009. This was also the second-to-last game that Square would release on the Super Famicom. Why? Because their last game was Treasure Hunter G, released two months later. And not long afterwards, Nintendo and Squaresoft would have a fallout over the N64. Squaresoft would head over to Sony where they would give us Final Fantasy VII a year later. As for Nintendo, they would be in a dark age that would last for about a decade.

But anyway, let's continue. Yoshihiko Maekawa & Chihiro Fujioka directed this. Miyamoto was in a producer role with Kensuke Tanabe & Atsushi Tejima as writers. For the composer, it's a no-brainer. Yoko Shimomura. She doesn't miss. At all & she will be composing for the remake so it's going to be such fun. So anyway, the story starts off simple enough. Mario going to Bowser's Castle to rescue Peach (or Princess Toadstool) from the likes of Bowser. But things go very wrong. A giant sword falls from the sky, breaking through the legendary Star Road and it ends up landing in the castle. In turn, Star Road is then split into Seven Star Pieces while Mario, Bowser and Peach fly off in different directions. Afterwards, Mario tries to return to Bowser's Castle only for the giant sword Exor to destroy the bridge. With no way through, Mario now has to go through it the long way. Along the way, he will meet many new friends & familiar faces. He must now work with them to recover the seven Star Pieces and save the Mushroom Kingdom from the menacing Smithy gang.

Super Mario RPG is a turn-based game and if you've seen me cover games like this, then you get an idea. However this is simplistic where each of the four face buttons can give you access to different items. Y is for Special Attacks. A is for Regular Items. X is for Items. B is for everything else. The game also has a bit of a gimmick via Timed Attacks. If you time your button press with an attack, you can gain an additional benefit such as increased damage or healing. It can get really addicting too.

Part 1 serves as the beginning where we get the hang of the controls while Mario is off on a journey of epic proportions. In Part 2, we meet with a new ally Mallow as he has problems of his own and needs our help.
