Super Mario Was Nearly Popeye the Sailor Man #shorts
We all know and love Super Mario! But did you know that Mario was nearly Popeye the Sailor? It’s true! Back during the original conception of the Donkey Kong arcade classic, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Super Mario, actually wanted to have Popeye as his protagonist!
Popeye was originally seen way back in 1929 and the team at Nintendo thought that his remaining presence in the US market would make the new game a hit!
The idea was to use Popeye as what is now known as Jumpman (later renamed Super Mario), his nemesis Bluto which was later replaced by Donkey Kong and then of course Olive Oyl was the damsel in distress which was then turned into Pauline, later renamed Princess Toadstool and then of course now known as Princess peach. The love triangle of the original Popeye characters was a perfect dynamic for a video game!
In the end though Nintendo was unable to secure the rights to the Popeye franchise and as such Shigeru Miyamoto came up with his own characters! And thankfully he did as Super Mario is now maybe even more recognisable than Mickey Mouse!
Long Live Super Mario and his crew! Just make sure to eat some Spinach before you play your next round of Donkey Kong or any Super Mario game!
