Can you imagine beating Superman (Atari 2600, 1979) in just a few minutes? Back in the day, this game felt like an open-world adventure before we even knew what that meant!
Atari 2600 was home to some of the earliest superhero video games, and Superman was among the first. Featuring a side-view metropolis, this game had you repairing a bridge, dodging kryptonite, capturing Lex Luthor and his goons, and then rushing back to the Daily Planet—all before anyone realized Clark Kent was missing.
In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, this was cutting-edge. The game even introduced one of the first uses of a “continue” feature through its innovative use of multiple screens and character transformations. Sure, the graphics were simple, but playing as Superman in a video game back then? Pure magic.
Did you ever take flight in this classic?
