If you grew up in Britain in the 80's, I'd imagine you'd be familiar with SuperTed. It was a fairly typical cartoon show from the era, featuring a teddy bear brought to life when a "Spotty Man" arrived from outer space and covered him in cosmic dust - euphemisms abound, but let's not go there.
Alternative Software, a prominent budget software label of the day, acquired the license to produce a game based on the SuperTed IP, with Enigma Variations taking on development duties. From memory, Alternative Software games were pretty hit and miss in terms of quality to begin with, but the low prices meant they remained an attractive pocket money proposition, even if the games were a bit rubbish.
Unfortunately, SuperTed might have been cheap, but it's far from cheerful. Presentation is pretty good, featuring a really nice status panel at the bottom of the screen depicting both SuperTed and Spotty, but there's virtually zero gameplay here, beyond a very basic shoot 'em up (sans actual bullets). The player simply flies SuperTed across the screen, punching out various enemies which appear, then punching an end-of-level boss until it dies.
Making matters worse is the fact the game features just two levels, neither of which are any fun, and the whole thing can be beaten in under 5 minutes. There's barely any game here, so even for £2.99, this would have been a total rip-off.
