Double Dragon Nintendo Game Boy Review

Game Boy owners can now have another reason to feel smug as everyone’s favourite Duff em up comes to the monochrome handheld. However, before this review begins, I just want to firstly say Hello to Eddie and Harriot, yes that’s right I can see you sitting there I’m speaking to you both through the miracle of television,the internet and time and space to tell you to grab yourselves a cup of tea and relax because this review is for you and I hope you both enjoy it.
It’s time to Relive all my 80s martial arts fantasies because
Double Dragon takes all the kicking, screaming and fantastical moves from the Arcade classic puts in a blender and says hey bald bloke have a swig of this, and you know what it’s doesn’t taste like pish! Liam Neeson bloke and former East 17 member Billy Lee must battle across the mean streets of New York in order to get fit bird Marion back who has been kidnapped. Before you say, why can’t these videogame birds just learn some self defence, The black warriors storm the streets and try to give Billy a good kicking. Luckily our bloke bill has just watched an Eastenders special with hard blokes the Mitchell brothers and has invested many hours into the local Robocop Arcade so he is good to go.
The original Double Dragon Arcade was ported to many consoles including your Mum’s microwave so like an episode of Neighbours with a Paul Robinson meltdown, have we seen it all before? Jimmy Hill! This is a superb port of Double Dragon that actually makes a ton of improvements and refines the game engine. Whilst the Master System and Mega Drive version can boast authenticity, the controls just slightly let it down on those versions and they are about as exciting as trainspotting in Wolverhampton. The first thing about Double Dragon on Game Boy is the comic book graphical style. The game is grittier, and the characters sprites really look more detailed and less cartoony. The game controls perfectly and It feels like a fair challenge when kicking or punching your opponents. Now, I would make some silly joke about some other ports of Double Dragon being slightly pish, but since I’m contractually obliged not to do so I wont! The enemies have been toned down a bit here and so its still tough but balances out the offence really well. Whilst this is similar to the NES version and Master System versions Some stages and features have been radically altered and changed. The Nes version for example had Billy duff up blokes to earn moves as he progressed, whilst this Game Boy version gives them all to you wirh a cheeky smile and says hi bloke merry Christmas. Even large Charles Bronson baldy bloke Abobo has been changed meaning he is capable of doling out some serious damage but if you know where to hit him he’s about as hard as a gaggle of baby geese. Even Mop headed Bloke Chintai has been given a Sonic the Hedgehog style roll when he attacks and the Williams boys fresh from collecting their dole cheques still pretend they are hard.

Time to address the Fat bloke in the room though and answer the age old question which still haunts me to this day. Oi bloke, why is’nt Double Dragon 2 player Co Op and why have they increased the price of biscuit’s Yes, other versions had the two player Co Op option and whilst it would be nice to say it wouldn’t lose anything without it I would be lying. This game desperately needed it and would have been a fantastic experience for two people to work together and then in the finale duff each other up for the right to wed Marion. What we have is a 1 on 1 fighter borrowed from the NES version which is kind of cack.
