Perhaps we find liminal spaces unsettling because they remind us how temporary our habitations and designed spaces are. They succumb to age much faster than we do, and they always feel odd when they are not occupied. It is the humanity which makes the space. The space itself is a monument to bygone human life when uninhabited. Much like we do in the infinite regression, in liminal spaces we face what we fear most: time.
