So this is my journey switching to using openSUSE 13.1 as my primary distribution. In this series, I'll try to share the highs and lows of tweaking out an openSUSE desktop as well as assessing its various merits along the way.

Part 1 looks at how I set up my new install with codecs, software repositories, font smoothing, and some Gnome extensions.
