Here is where we do more than 1 damage to the Cyclops. Having a high POW will and weapon mastery will bypass the Cyclop's defence, allowing for more damage. Of course, if you forge weapons and temper them, this helps as well. The game is simple enough to where you never need to forge/temper but it's a good option to have.
