The Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence are undoubtedly key elements on the stony path to Digital Transformation and future software development. Both are not new but technical reality for our projects and products over decades. However, the new feature is the scaling effect of IoT and AI explosively penetrating the software world.

This rapidly leads to major changes for the challenges and the solutions to be applied in order to meet them. Again both, challenges and solutions are not new. Instead the focus of methodical approaches is changing. Especially quality gains in importance. The industrial location of Europe depends and profits from their product quality as success factor. We are not the cheapest nor the fastest – quality makes our products so special.

A rethink and a skill shift in the development projects, a rethinking of the engineering and validation approaches is needed in order to keep up with changes. For example a shift left to proactive quality engineering from the the very first PLM steps, rather than pure retrospective testing, is becoming increasingly important to enable quality in software projects. But also the focus of the quality aspects to be considered is slowly but surely shifting from the old school focus on functional towards completely different quality aspects.

State-of-the-art software quality deals with very heterogeneous IT landscapes and data, with components that "develop their own will" (AI), and with a growing impact of customer requirements such as usability or IT-security. Even ethical factors and the public discussions will play a crucial role.

The presentation shows the challenges and their implications for projects and products and the approach of personnel certification schemes, with which the German Testing Board as an independent organization offers solutions in the form of de facto standards and a common glossary. As one step, the course "Certified Professional for IoT" will be available in 2018 as a collaborative outcome of an ASQF / GTB working group.
