Tapper Longplay (Commodore 64 Version)
Tapper Longplay (Commodore 64 Version) -
Tapper is a classic arcade game originally released in 1983 by Bally Midway. Designed by Marvin Glass and Associates, it became iconic for its unique gameplay and humorous take on bar service. Players take on the role of a bartender, serving drinks to thirsty customers while collecting empty mugs and tips. The game’s fast-paced nature and increasing difficulty made it a major hit in arcades, eventually leading to its release on multiple platforms, including the Commodore 64.
The C64 port does an excellent job of retaining the charm and mechanics of the original. Players control the bartender, moving between multiple bar counters to serve mugs of beer before impatient patrons reach the end of the bar. Missing a customer or letting a mug shatter costs a life. The gameplay remains just as frantic and challenging, requiring quick reflexes and multitasking to keep up with the growing demands of each level.
Graphically, this version offers a faithful adaptation of the arcade’s vibrant and humorous visuals, though naturally simplified for the hardware. The animations, from sliding mugs to rowdy customers, are surprisingly well-done for the system. While the audio doesn’t match the complexity of the arcade game, it’s charming enough to complement the experience and keep players engaged.
One significant change from the arcade version is the removal of Budweiser branding, likely to broaden its appeal and avoid promoting alcohol to younger players. Instead, the home release often went by the name Root Beer Tapper or simply Tapper, replacing beer with a family-friendly beverage while keeping the same gameplay intact.
For me, this is one of the best arcade ports on the Commodore 64. It captures the spirit of the original so well, from its humorous design to its addictive, fast-paced action. I’ve always loved how fun and accessible it is, and even now, it’s just as enjoyable as it was back in the ’80s. This version stands out in the C64 library, offering a perfect blend of challenge, nostalgia, and charm.
Ps.
After completing the first loop, the game restarted from the beginning with increased difficulty. I cleared the first two stages again for good measure before intentionally losing all my lives.
