Exploration and traversal are key elements of Tchia's gameplay. Players can jump and glide their way across the vast archipelago, using the Tricks system to perform cool stunts and dives. The free climbing mechanic lets players ascend anything in the world without restriction, including any physics-driven tree. They can also take to the ocean waves, sail their customizable boat across turquoise lagoons, and dive around coral reefs and shipwrecks.
Combat and encounters in Tchia are challenging and intense, as players face the Maano, mysterious enemies spawned from pieces of wood and fabric created by the cruel tyrant Meavora, who has imprisoned Tchia's father. Players must keep moving, improvise, and use all of Tchia's abilities to come out on top of these encounters. They can also put their skills to the test by tackling mystical challenges in the Totem Shrines.
The story of Tchia is a heartfelt one, as players meet a diverse cast of characters inspired by New Caledonian cultures. Fully animated cutscenes voiced in traditional language punctuate the journey, while an original orchestral score infused with local sounds creates a unique and immersive world. Players can also jam on their fully playable ukulele, a trusty companion throughout the game, using it at key story moments during rhythm sections, or play unlockable melodies at any point in the open world to trigger special events such as attracting animals or triggering rainfall.
Customization and items in Tchia are abundant, as players can stylize Tchia's clothing and boat with hundreds of unlockable cosmetic items ranging from traditional looks to over-the-top options. They will also unlock useful and fun tools along the way, such as a flashlight, slingshot, compass, and camera.
At the core of Tchia's design is the inspiration drawn from the real-world location of New Caledonia. Awaceb's co-founders hail from this tiny island in the Pacific Ocean, and the game reflects their love for its diverse cultures, music, languages, folklores, and traditions.
