Tears and Triumph: A Journey of Redemption in The Book of Clarence (Avalynn G.'s review)
The film Book of Clarence is an incredible film with the perfect mix of comedy, action and awe. I loved the scenery and costuming, and the design element brought me back in time to when the film was set.
The storyline is about a man named Clarence (LaKeith Stanfield) who owes money to Jedediah that he uses to gamble on a chariot race. Jedediah gives Clarence a deadline to have the money paid back, but in true Clarence fashion, he doesn’t have the money and now Jedadiah wants Clarence dead. At the same time, Jesus (Nicholas Pinnock) is making a name for himself and creating quite a following. Clarence thinks Jesus uses tricks and decides to become the next Messiah himself in order to pay back Jedadiah. The Romans capture Clarence because they think he is the real Jesus and want to prove him to be a liar -- they ask him to walk on water, and miraculously, he does it! The Romans are not thrilled, so crucifixion it is! Of course, Jesus is still around, with a few more miracles up his sleeve.
My favorite part of Book of Clarence is when Clarence gets baptized by John the Baptist. John keeps slapping Clarence and dunks him under water a little longer than necessary. It was hilarious! I also love when the Romans have him walk on water. I expected him to fall in but he didn’t. I was so surprised! LaKeith Standfield is a terrific actor and showcases his variety of skills in this movie. I had mixed feelings about Clarence in the beginning. I thought he was a selfish man but by the end I understood that he is just trying to grow as a human being to earn the trust of the girl he loves, his twin brother and his community. This movie was very surprising and had many twists and turns I did not expect.
The film’s message is to be selfless and to do things for other people and not just yourself. At the end of the movie, Clarence realizes in order to get the love and respect he truly wants, he has to sacrifice himself to provide safety and freedom for others.
I give Book of Clarence 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18, plus adults. This film uses adult language and has partially disturbing content. This film is available in theaters now. https://youtu.be/G6zPAG3IeEk
