Tengai Makyō (or Far East of Eden) is a popular RPG franchise that has gained popularity in the West despite never being officially released in English. It's easy to see why -- with its funny script, goofy characters, big character portraits, animated scenes and voice acting, Tengai Makyō really tries to be more cinematic than its contemporaries. In that regard, it succeeds.
However, the game still suffers from the same flaws many of the games of the era do: it's excessively grindy. There is so much grinding in this game. And it's tough. After my first three hours with the game, I wasn't sure I wanted to keep playing it. But as is the case, again, with many RPGs of the era, if you persevere a little, things tend to get easier.
I was expecting more from the enemy design... lots of palette swapping all-around. I was also expecting more from the music... nothing really stood out here for me. The battle system is pretty standard for the time, but the battles are slow. Thankfully, at the end of the game, when suddenly the game's difficulty spikes like crazy, there is a dragon that you can use to cheese free experience points and thus level up some 20 levels in a short amount of time. Extremely recommended.
Ultimately, I was not impressed by this first Tengai Makyō game. Do the sequels really get better? I don't know, but I sure hope so! (Please note that I played this game on an Analogue Duo and the game crashed many times as a result -- hopefully they release a patch that fixes the crashes one day.) 天外魔境 ZIRIA
