Tessellation | What is it & How Does It Work In Games ?
When DirectX 11 burst to the scene, there was a whole bunch of additional features it allowed game developers to use, and one of the most popular is tessellation. Tessellation breaka down triangles into smaller pieces, which increases the amount of geometry in a scene (usually following a level of detail based upon the distance of objects to the camera or play character). So to further explain, tessellation then works with other techniques such as displacement mapping to allow details in surfaces to better decpict how say a stoney floor would appear.
