I finally beat Testing Grounds Hardcore with only picking up the two Fireaxes and medkits/gems dropped by zombies, I also permitted the use of Zombie Brain Smasher: there are 163 zombies to chop up.

The main challenge of only axe is red gem zombies, which take out roughly 3/4 of Jodi's health in a single bite. It means being even slightly damaged is basically a death sentence when facing them if you aren't in total control.
