Darius was Taito's attempt to compete in the arcades against the likes of R-type and Gradius. Technically impressive, it featured three screens depicting the large playing field. Obviously for the home ports this was impossible so it was converted down to a single screen and renamed Darius+. The spectrum version has very large colorful sprites with a very tight playing area which is a little detrimental to the playing experience. Only a hardened shoot 'em up fans would be able to navigate these tricky attack waves. It's still a fun game and looks very impressive but for me it's time to whack on the cheats.
