The 39 Steps Let's Play Part 1 - Bored in the Wrong Ditch
Starting off a new let's play series, I've decided to upload this game in particular on Wednesday evenings. Wednesdays are when I upload my book discussions. However, seeing as how this game is a recreation of the 1915 novel by the same name, I think it is a suitable companion series.
I admit fully that I had never even heard of this novel before I played the game, and having finished the game, decided to do some research into it. It was well-received and spawned four sequels surrounding the protagonist, as an ordinary citizen who keeps getting into high-stakes matters. There have been a few movie adaptations, and seemingly has been credited for spawning the sub-genre of the man on the run plot, which is still used to this day.
I do want to mention now that unlike most visual novels, which tend to have branching storylines or a few different endings, this is a storyline where you're entirely passive to the events that take place. There are no choices, you only advance the story and read along. I suppose that's why the Steam page doesn't use the term visual novel as a description, but instead goes by Interactive Fiction. It's so similar in style though that I will likely refer to it as a VN myself, as I believe other VNs have been wholly linear too, despite not being based off of another's work.
