The 4 AKI Wrestling Games - Cartridge Authentication & Manual
RANKING: A+
The 1st in a line of 4 wrestling games by AKI. A lot of people say these are the best wrestling games ever made, I'd agree. It's got a very easy to use grappling system. Tap "A" for weak quick grapples, hold "A" for strong grapples. Once you grab ahold of the opponent, then you can press: up+A; A; down+A; up+B; B; down+B to do different wrestling moves. Easy, anyone can pick up and play this, no need to memorize Mortal Kombat style moves.
To beat the game & get to the credits you must win a belt in "League Challenge". There are many belts you just gotta get one belt to get credits and there is no super ending for getting all the belts, just the same credits.
The AI here is easy to beat on easy mode (I bet you are saying "duh!", play the 2 WWF games and that's not the case, they are hard.) To really get a feel for deep mechanics, you have to play on the normal or hard. There is sort of a rock, paper, scissor mechanic here: strikes beat grapples, grapples beat blocks, blocks beat strikes. You have to learn the block and dodge; pressed at the right time you can counter the enemy. Dodge counters grapples, blocks counter strikes. And there is the taunt, it increases your spirit meter (attacking the opponent does this too), if your spirit is higher, you are more likely to be able to counter him and he will be less likely to counter you. You will also be able to kick out of holds and pins faster the higher it is. But don't keep beating your opponent, if you continue to beat on him while his spirit is in the low blue, it will recharge to half full. So, pin 'em in the blue. Once the spirit meter is red and flashing, taunt to get special, it's the best move you have.
I'd highly recommend it, I rented this back when it came out, at the time I didn't care for wrestling, and I liked this game. This is very basic compared to the other 3 AKI games. You can only use weapons outside the ring and can't run into and out of the ring, just slowly crawl in and out. The music is MIDI but sounds good. And remember to put on Realism mode in the options to get blood. The Japanese version of this game is called "Virtual Pro Wrestling 64" and has a much bigger roster.
