2The frenzy over this book was intense and despite strict instructions and tight security around the world 7,680 books were stolen from a warehouse in England 4 days before and sold on the black market.
The scale of the popularity is incredible: The first Harry Potter book’s first print run saw fewer than 1000 books published and they were only released in Great Britain. The fifth book was released globally and saw 6.8 million copies in its first print run in the US alone with most of them flying off the shelves in the first week.
Amazon.com…a tiny platform compared to today…received orders for more than 789,000 copies of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" in advance of its June 21, 2003, release.
The book has since sold over 65 million copies and been translated into at least 55 languages.
The Harry Potter series has to date sold more than 600 million copies.
