The Hulk went through something of a tortuous development that began in 1990 and saw the script go through multiple rewrites with different teams. Ang Lee was brought in to direct in 2001 only to order yet another rewrite and that appears to be when most of the remaining frivolity was eliminated. According to Eric Bana, Lee saw the Hulk as a Greek Tragedy which is an interesting approach but probably taking things a little too seriously.

I can see why the film execs thought Lee was a safe pair of hands being brought on just as his comic book-esque Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was netting major international acclaim but that film takes itself super seriously and then Lee’s next movie was Brokeback Mountain which is the furthest thing from a laugh riot.

Interesting fact(s): Ang Lee turned down Brokeback Mountain in favor of working on the Hulk. The stress and exertion (watch his mo-cap performances) of filming the Hulk nearly forced Lee into an early retirement but he wanted to get Brokeback Mountain made so he came back.
