The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is an open world action-adventure video game based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, and the 2014 film of the same name. It is a sequel to 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, and is set in the same continuity, different from that of the films. The game's main storyline loosely follows the plot of the film, and introduces new threats for Spider-Man to face, primarily crime lord Kingpin, and serial killer Cletus Kasady, who has a twisted sense of justice and is regarded as a dark reflection of Spider-Man. Villains from the film as well as fan-favorite, classic Marvel characters are woven together in a twisted web of adrenaline-fueled, free-roaming, web-slinging action that puts players on a collision course with an evil far beyond Spider-Man’s reckoning. Play as Peter Parker, Spider-Man’s citizen alter-ego persona as you investigate the motivations of multifaceted villains. New web-swing mechanic includes expanded web-shooter capabilities and chemical properties that allow you to freeze and blow up items on impact. Explore and take on villains in a more expansive Manhattan cityscape than the previous Amazing Spider-Man.

Two years into his superhero career, Peter Parker/Spider-Man resumes his search for Uncle Ben's killer, Dennis Carradine, but he is soon murdered by somebody known as the Carnage Killer. Later, while responding to an attack on the Oscorp building and battling both the Russian Mob and a rival gang led by Herman, Spider-Man saves electric engineer Max Dillon, who is very fond of him, and encounters Schultz again, now calling himself the "Shocker" after donning a pair of vibro-shock gauntlets. Upon defeating the Shocker, Spider-Man learns that there is a gang war involving all of the city's major gangs, and that everyone is trying to gain the upper hand by stealing Oscorp technology.
Eventually, Spider-Man and Kraven track downCletus Kasady, who claims that he and Spider-Man are very alike, before being defeated and imprisoned at the Ravencroft Institute. There, Kasady is experimented on with a red substance code-named "Venom" and becomes the supervillain Carnage.
