The Battle of Gitschin saw the Austrian forces, led by Clam-Gallas, redeployed in Jičín after a previous defeat. Clam-Gallas believed he would receive support from the Austrian main army, and he decided to give battle. The outnumbered Prussian forces, advancing from multiple directions, exploited the disorganization in the Austrian ranks, including a gap left by the late-arriving Saxon army.

The battle showcased the tactical advantage of the Prussian Dreyse needle gun and played a pivotal role in the Austro-Prussian War's larger strategic developments.
