The family sitcom THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES (1962-1971) centers around the endearing Clampett family and how they have been uplifted by circumstance from their countryside home and made to move to Beverly Hills, California, an environment far different from what they find familiar. The minimal, humble lifestyle the “Hillbillies” are used to provides an interesting contrast with the exuberant, superficial ones of many of their new neighbors humor around them. A sort of cultural clash, then, contributes to the humour of the show.
In its original run, the series lasted nine seasons, totaling 274 25-minute episodes. In terms of Nielsen ratings it was very successful, remaining at the top of the rankings for many seasons, particularly the first two during which it was ranked number one. It was nominated for seven Emmys during its run, and set the precedent for future rural and culture-conflict shows after it.
Production History
The Beverly Hillbillies was made in Bel Air and Hollywood by the production companies Filmways Television (Petticoat Junction, The Addams Family, etc) and briefly McCadden Productions. CBS Television Distribution was its distributor. It was originally formatted in black-and-white, until 1965 when it moved to color.

In “Trick or Treat,” Granny becomes frustrated by how the Clampetts’ neighbours never call or visit. To amend this, they decide to make an effort and actively go out themselves to their doors instead. Unbeknownst to them, however, they choose the night of Halloween to do so, but fortunately enough they are already dressed in their usual “hillbilly” garb, interpreted by their neighbours as festive and holiday-appropriate.
